Our health is something we sometimes take for granted. Unfortunately, we cannot rely on good food alone to nourish us. We must also be willing to exercise regularly and explore other ways to keep fit and stay healthy. In the end, the best decisions will be the ones you make in conjunction with your health care practitioner. Part of our goal with this newsletter is to provide some general health-related information that will assist in that process.

VITAMIN E UPDATE -- An international study of almost 30,000 men found that those who took 50 mg of vitamin E every day for five to eight years were 32 percent less likely to develop prostate cancer and 41 percent less likely to die from the disease. It is the first large-scale study to show that taking a vitamin may reduce the risk for a major form of cancer.

IT DEPENDS -- Although TV commercials and magazine ads would have you believe that incontinence (involuntary urine leakage) is a normal part of growing old, it's not normal, even at age 85. A problem for 13 million Americans, incontinence is almost always treatable, even curable, with diet, exercise, medication, or surgery (the last resort). But, only 25% of people seek medical help for the problem.

HEART ATTACK ALERT -- The average heart attack victim waits two or three hours before going to a hospital emergency room. That's a shame, because the new blood clot dissolving drugs now stocked by hospital emergency rooms work best if they are administered as soon as possible after heart attack symptoms appear. If you experience any of these classic signs of a heart attack, call 911 immediately: uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness, tightness, burning, or aching under the breast-bone that lasts two minutes or more. Other common places for pain to be felt, besides the chest, include: neck and jaw, inside arm and shoulder (left side more frequently than right), upper abdomen (often mistaken for indigestion), and between the shoulder blades. The pain may be continuous or may come and go. Often there is shortness of breath, dizziness, weakness, clamminess, sweating, nausea, vomiting, and/or anxiety. Although pain in one form or another almost always accompanies a heart attack, rather than "pain," some people just have a feeling that "something is wrong." A feeling of apprehension, restlessness, or "sense of foreboding" may be recognized.

TEMPORARY TOOTHACHE TREATMENT -- For a toothache, take a few cloves from the spice rack and place them between the aching tooth and your cheek. Chew the cloves a little bit to release their juice, then leave them in place for a half-hour or so or until the pain subsides. Continue this treatment until you can get to a dentist.

DRINK YOUR WATER! -- You normally lose about two and one-half quarts (ten cups) of fluid daily through perspiration, urination, respiration and bowel movements. So you need to replace this amount each day. DRUG INTERACTION WARNING -- Anyone who takes the anticoagulant Warfarin for an irregular heartbeat should avoid frequent use of the over-the-counter pain reliever acetaminophen (i.e. - Tylenol). New research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association shows that taking four or more regular-strength acetaminophen tablets per day (325 mg) with Warfarin increases the effects of Warfarin and the risk of internal bleeding.

HEAD LICE -- According to a British study of eight different compounds that are commonly used for head lice, only permethrin consistently showed a cure rate of nearly 100%. Look for over-the-counter head lice shampoos that contain permethrin, or ask your pharmacist for a recommendation.

HOW MANY CALORIES? -- According to the American Running and Fitness Association, the general rule is that you should eat 10 to 15 calories a day for every pound of your desired (not actual) weight. Example, if your desired weight is 170 pounds, you should eat between 1,700 and 2,550 calories a day. If you are sedentary, keep it to 10 calories per pound; if you are extremely active, 15. Women should not eat less than 1,200 calories a day, and men no less than 1,500 calories. Before making a major change in your caloric intake, check with your primary care provider.

THE HERBAL CORNER
* Featuring "Psyllium"

For centuries, traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic physicians have used PSYLLIUM (Latin name: plantago psyllium; also known as plantain seeds) to treat diarrhea, constipation, hemorrhoids, and urinary problems. The ground-up seeds, rich in fiber, make a safe, gentle, bulk-forming laxative and are the active ingredient in many commercial, non-prescription, laxative products.

This eighteen-inch-tall plantain herb produces white flowers and abundant, small, brown seed pods. It is the seeds and the leaves of this plant that are most often used for medicinal purposes. Psyllium seeds are also known to assist with the healing of wounds and skin infections when prepared for topical use. Both diarrhea and constipation may be treated, because the herb absorbs excess fluid in the intestinal tract and increases stool volume. Recently, it has been suggested that psyllium may help prevent heart disease by clearing excess cholesterol from the body.

Target ailments include: ulcers, colitis, constipation, hemorrhoidal irritation, diarrhea, and several other colorectal and intestinal problems. Psyllium is available as whole seeds, ground or powdered seeds, and in various commercial bulk-forming laxative preparations. Psyllium can cause allergic reactions in people who have allergies to dust or grasses. Severe allergic reactions are rare.

Persons using psyllium fiber are encouraged to drink eight to ten glasses of water throughout the day to prevent any blockage of the intestines. Use of this herb should be gradual to give the body a chance to adjust to the increase in fiber. Pregnant women should avoid excessive use of psyllium and it should not be administered to children younger than two years of age.

* "Colon Health, Intestinal Cleansing"

We are slowly building up toxic residue from all the food combinations that we have been eating over a lifetime, or for that fact over any given period of time. Refined products, sugar, chemicals, additives, preservatives, salt, pasteurized milk products, hydrogenated and rancid fats all lead to toxic build-up in the body and lead to further fatigue, lack of vitality, and disease.

The result of eating the American diet, from infancy to adulthood, leads to a thick mucus build-up throughout the digestive tract preventing proper assimilation of nutrients from the food we eat. A normal, healthy colon should eliminate 2-4 bulky softer stools each day. Some authorities even suggest that it is best to eliminate after each meal. However, the average American diet clogs the colon and the wastes stagnate the colon.

The stagnant colon has decaying putrefying matter from food choices and wrong food combinations. Scientists have found 36 poisons produced as a result of putrefaction from constipation which are absorbed through the walls of the intestines and gets into the lymphatic, nervous, and circulatory (bloodstream) systems, and the entire body becomes polluted. Along with these poisons may be found food coloring, food additives, food preservatives, pesticides, and other chemicals that are in and on our foods. The liver is the first line of defense to try to keep these poisons from entering the body, but because of too many toxins it becomes overloaded and cannot handle this load.

The toxicity arising from the colon is a major cause of degenerative disease. At a seminar in Great Britain, attended by leading physicians in the Royal Society of Medicine, it was explained how poisons are constantly bathing delicate body cells and setting up changes which finally result in grave disease problems.

The British physicians concluded that the colon, and subsequent poisoning from it, leads to infections, cancers, headaches, leg pains, arthritis, depression, insomnia, chronic fatigue, difficulty in concentrating, wrinkles, boils, eczema, herpes, lupus, acne, female problems, premenstrual syndrome, circulatory, kidney, liver, respiratory, and colon problems. The list of diseases they gave are inclusive of almost all degenerative diseases of today. These diseases all respond favorably when the toxic colon was cleansed properly.

A toxic body becomes a sick body. Dr. Norman Walker, who made a lifetime of researching the colon, says that it is the number one affliction underlying nearly every ailment and being the primary cause of nearly every disturbance of the human system. The health of the body depends on the colon and toxic build-up in the colon destroys that health.

"The elimination of undigested food and other waste products is as important as the proper digestion and assimilation of food," says Dr. Walker, in Colon Health. Death can be said to begin in the colon. The toxic build-up can interfere with nutrient absorption even when nutritional intake maybe adequate. Proteins, vitamins, and enzymes suffer the most from a toxic colon. When the colon is first cleansed of old, dehydrated, toxic poisons, a proper food combining diet will have even more of a noticeable impact on one's health.

Few realize that failure to effectively eliminate waste products from the body causes such fermentation and putrefaction that ailments and diseases rapidly proceed. One will never attain superb nor optimal health until the old hardened feces within the body are dissolved and removed. In order to become healthy one must have a complete removal of old mucoid matter from one's colon.

One can make a major impact on removal of the chemicals, additives, toxins, and poisons produced within one's colon by cleansing the colon. An advanced and extremely effective method of cleansing the colon is with activated charcoal crystals (from virgin coconut shells), psyllium husks and seed, and a good, gentle non-habit-forming herbal tablet. The activated charcoal has such absorptive powers that it will draw off from the colon walls any build-up, and it will absorb toxins in the colon. It does not interfere with absorption of nutrients to any significant degree, instead, after the waste is removed the assimilation of nutrients will be improved. If the digestive system doesn't work properly the cells do not receive adequate nourishment and they will not regenerate properly resulting in malnourishment and allowing serious diseases to manifest themselves. It is logical that one will not improve permanently until the pollution is removed from the colon system.

The cleansing of the colon may affect many conditions, a few being:

  1. Digestive Organs: colitis, gastritis, degeneration of the liver, gas, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, and ulcers.
  2. Cardiovascular System: low or high blood pressure, permanent dilation of the arteries, degeneration of the heart, angina, and arteriosclerosis.
  3. Nervous System: headaches, depression, insomnia, chronic fatigue, and paralysis.
  4. Eyes: hardening of the lenses, cataracts, and hemorrhage.
  5. Skin: dermatitis, eczema, boils, and seborrhea.
  6. Muscles and Joints: muscular pain, degeneration of muscles, wasting of breasts, arthritis, rheumatism, urinary tract disease, and mastitis.
  7. General Disturbances: anemia, lowered resistance to infection, grown retardation, irritability, anger, goiter, tumors, senility, pre-menstrual syndrome, etc.

THE MINERAL MINUTE

Did you know that "boron":

Boron is a trace mineral that has many uses in the human body. It is primarily needed for healthy bones and teeth, and the proper metabolism of the essential minerals calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus. Boron also enhances brain function, promotes/improves alertness, helps to prevent osteoporosis, and builds muscles. Boron deficiency also accentuates vitamin D deficiency. It is required to convert vitamin D to its most active form within the kidneys. It also appears that boron is required to activate certain hormones including estrogen.

Although most people are not deficient in boron, the elderly usually benefit by supplementing their diets with boron in 2mg to 3mg daily doses. It is older individuals, especially postmenopausal women who have a greater problem with calcium absorption and utilization. A study conducted by the Unites States Department of Agriculture indicated that within eight days of supplementing their daily diet with boron, a test group of postmenopausal women lost forty-percent less calcium and one-third less magnesium through their urine than they had before beginning boron supplementation.

Fruits and vegetables are the main sources of boron. It can be found in higher concentrations in apples, carrots, grapes, spinach, cabbage, nuts, pears, and many grains. Premium colloidal mineral supplements are also great sources of boron.

In general, minerals are essential for good health. The body utilizes over 80 minerals for maximum function. Because our plants, soils, and water sources are so nutrient depleted, even if we eat the healthiest foods, we are not getting all the minerals we need. HEALTHY RECIPE OF THE MONTH
* Fresh-Herb Turkey

  • 1 (12-pound) fresh or frozen whole turkey, thawed
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh sage
  • 3 teaspoons chopped fresh chives, divided
  • 2 teaspoons chopped fresh thyme, divided
  • 1 teaspoon chopped fresh parsley
  • Cooking spray
  • 2-3/4 cups fat-free, less-sodium chicken broth, divided
  • 1/3 cup dry sherry
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
  1. Preheat oven to 350°.
  2. Remove giblets and neck from turkey; discard. Rinse turkey thoroughly with cold water; pat dry. Starting at neck cavity, loosen skin from breast and drumsticks by inserting fingers, gently pushing between skin and meat. Combine sage, 2 teaspoons chives, 1 teaspoon thyme, and 1 teaspoon parsley in a small bowl. Rub sage mixture under loosened skin and inside body cavity. Tie ends of legs with cord. Lift wing tips up and over back; tuck under bird.
  3. Place turkey on a broiler pan coated with cooking spray or on a rack set in a shallow roasting pan. Insert meat thermometer into meaty part of thigh, making sure not to touch bone. Bake at 350° for 3 hours or until thermometer registers 180°. (Cover turkey loosely with foil if it gets too brown.) Remove turkey from oven. Cover loosely with foil; let stand at least 10 minutes before carving.
  4. Place a zip-top plastic bag inside a 2-cup glass measure. Pour drippings from pan into bag; let stand 10 minutes (fat will rise to the top). Seal bag; snip off 1 bottom corner of bag. Drain drippings into a medium saucepan, stopping before the fat layer reaches the opening. Stir in 2-1/2 cups broth and sherry. Bring to a boil; reduce heat, and simmer 10 minutes. Combine 1/4 cup broth and flour in a small bowl, stirring well with a whisk. Stir into sherry mixture, and bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Stir in 2 tablespoons parsley, 1 teaspoon chives, and 1 teaspoon thyme. Serve sauce with turkey. Yield: 12 servings (serving size: 6 ounces turkey and 1/4 cup sauce).
