The dictionary definition of a colloid is "a substance that - is in a state of division preventing passage through a semi-permeable membrane - consists of particles too small for resolution with an ordinary light microscope, and in suspension or solution, fails to settle out and diffracts a beam of light." Okay, so what does that mean? Basically, a true colloid of silver will stay suspended in a solution of water and not fall to the bottom or clump together.
